"...They are just too slow to be relevant or effective."

At the beginning of the century, before smartphones and wifi were accessible, it was the library and PCs that made connecting to the rest of the world possible. For this project, I am trying to capture the essence of that time through a webcam video with a nostalgic 2000s vibe. People think that our generation grew up playing iPads, but that is not true. Although we use the internet all the time now, it is still relatively new. The phenomenon is irreversible, almost like the new television.

I always preferred playing on the computer over reading books of words when my mom took me to the public library. Whenever I stay in a library for too long, it brings me back to the library we frequented when I was a kid. They say the only constant in life is change. Now, surprisingly (or not), the camera on my MacBook Air 2020 is not so much different from my MacBook 2010.

This video was filmed from a child’s perspective. Even though technology has progressed so much, there are still things that are the same. Everything is happening but there are still stuffs that are unchanged. It is like picking up a book where you left it.

something is happening gallery exhibition

I have never had an exhibition at the library before, so this was a first for me and it was surprisingly complicated. For the photobook, I kept it simple by having just the pictures and almost no text. I did some editing with them and cut out some objects using the selection tool and I thought that was cool. I selected two photos from my project that I thought would fit the concept and prepared my inkjet prints. We wiped the glass before framing the pictures and hanging them onto the walls, and that was basically it. I had mine in both vertical and horizontal orientations and one in vibrant colors and the other in black and white in order to present a contrast between the pieces. I didn’t have the chance to help with the lighting, but I think it was setup fine. It was interesting to see that people showcased pictures in different scales, and it was hard to tell whether they were artistic choices or unintentional results. My prints turned out smaller and off-the-center, but the lack of precision added a little spice into the “something is happening” theme so I liked that.

everything we do

SoundCloud

Well, when I am not doing anything else, I like to be in my own world and have a delightful melody in mind, and that is what I hear in this sometimes-quiet world. For this piece, I was not trying to accomplish anything; it was just what I wanted to write at the moment. Even when it is rather relaxing, the music / sound would consist of dynamics. That is why this piece does not sound all simple despite technically being in 4/4 meter.

“…The ear world is a world of simultaneous relationships. Sounds obviously do not travel as fast as light. But ears can catch things that eyes cannot. I like to add small pieces to my electronic music; it adds a little bit of fun to the listening. Just like how colors vary on different screens, it is interesting that sounds are different in different spaces. I used the “small room” reverb on this one, and I liked how in sounds in the studio.

As humans, we rely on our visions mainly. (There is another quote – “…We feel more secure when things are visible.) One thing about writing music in Logic Pro X is that seeing the length / location of the music can be more precise than hearing it. Instead of “correcting” the notes, this time I just let them be so they are more natural.
